The Dead Weather, a project of Jack White (of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs), recently announced a tour that includes July and August dates throughout the country and a stop in Billings on July 26. The band, of Nashville, Tennessee, travels from Portland, Ore. to Billings to Minneapolis, making the Billings date one of the few in the upper west.

The Dead Weather debuted at the opening of the physical location of White’s record label, Third Man Records (also the label that houses The Dead Weather), in Nashville in 2009. White joined forces with Alison Mosshart (of The Kills) on vocals and guitar, Jack Lawrence (of The Raconteurs) on bass and drums, and Dena Fertial (of Queens of the Stone Age) on guitar and organ. The band is an intense energy of talents, an acute rock/blues fusion that leans on the talents of White and Mosshart’s musical chemistry. Their second album, “Sea of Cowards,” was released May 11.

The Dead Weather will perform July 26 at the Babcock Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. The performance is open to all ages and general admission tickets are available at Rimrock Mall, Ernie November, by phone at (800) 514-3849, or online www.tickets300.com.

I’m not a huge Jack White fan but, man, am I glad they refurbished the Babcock. It seems like there’s been a big change in the quality of acts that play in Billings over the past year or so but it feels like it’s really blown up since the Babcock remodel.

MontanaFair line-up aside, might we be moving past the era when all we get are ’80′s bands way past their prime and fourth-tier country acts?

Yes, Lew, right on–I love the Babcock, too! I was just writing Henry Rollins an email (he actually responds to email!) about what a wonderful place in the world that theater is: the art deco style and the turn-of-the century building. It is such a necessary place for shows, so finally it has opened as a venue and kudos to those brining such a diversity to town.

I’m glad the Babcock’s being recognized as an amazing venue. As Lew said, it seems like Billings is already bringing in more quality acts — kudos, all around! (Also, I love that Henry Rollins personally responds to email — that just seems really cool.) Great article, as always!
